Newt goes on the offensive after CNN’s John King brings up the “open marriage” controversy: After John King opened the debate with the mention of his ex-wife’s upcoming interview, King asked Gingrich, “Would you like to take some time to respond to that?”. Newt: “No, but I will.”
Gingrich called the “elite media” destructive, calling CNN’s decision to bring up the controversy “trash.” He added, ”I’m appalled you would begin a presidential debate like that.” Based on the audience’s roaring applause throughout Gingrich’s criticism of CNN and the mainstream media, I’m guessing they couldn’t agree more.
I believe that the personal lives of candidates are irrelevant unless they are doing something illegal. And the controversy about Gingrich and his ex-wife is still only alleged. So whether or not he wanted an open marriage with his ex-wife is not what gets under my skin.
What gets me is that it seems that in the minds of his supporters who give him a standing ovation, these claims aren’t even alleged. They are just lies to get past. And not because they don’t believe that the personal lives of candidates are off limits but because they simply want a new president. So this gives Gingrich, as well as themselves, a blank check for hypocrisy for their belief in the sanctity of marriage. They will throw that under the bus and probably compromise on any other standards just so that they can get a new president.
Hate filled passion is strange like that, I guess.
